Taking a beloved animated classic and translating it into a burlesque show can be a risky move, but Swamplesque completely leans into the chaotic charm, hilarious comedy, and massive heart that made Shrek such a global phenomenon. From the second the house lights dim, the entire room is swept up in a vibrant, laugh-out-loud adventure that keeps everyone hooked. They kick off as they mean to go on telling the audience “No flash photography, it’s our job to flash you”.

‍The humour hits the mark straight from the start, setting a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek tone. The script is packed with sharp visual gags, witty one-liners, and brilliant pop culture references that keep the jokes coming thick and fast. Rather than taking itself too seriously, the show embraces the utter absurdity of its fairytale world, creating an electric atmosphere where the audience laughs along with every single twist and turn.

‍What truly elevates the production is its fantastic visual presentation and creative staging. The costume design is nothing short of spectacular, bringing a firm message that all bodies are sexy. They bring every fairytale creature to life with vibrant colours, incredible detail, and clever theatrical craft. The bright, imaginative sets transition seamlessly from swamp to castle, while the energetic lighting design adds an extra splash of magic to the bigger musical numbers. Every scene feels polished, cinematic, and bursting with theatrical flair that makes the stage look constantly dynamic.

Beyond the top-tier comedy and impressive staging, the show carries a positive, heartwarming message about self-acceptance, celebrating individuality, and embracing what makes you and your body unique. The anthem ‘Baby Got Back’ serves as a high point of the evening, bringing the entire cast together for a roaring, empowering performance that gets everyone smiling. It is loud, colourful, and genuinely moving, reminding the audience that being different is something to be celebrated rather than hidden away.

With catchy musical numbers, razor-sharp comic timing, and an unstoppable sense of fun, Swamplesque delivers an unforgettable theatrical experience. The sheer passion, energy, and talent on display make for a completely fantastic evening out that leaves you feeling utterly uplifted.
