The Kobold Show! takes the low-level, mischief-making creatures of fantasy lore and turns them into the absolute stars of the stage. What follows is an hour of pure physical theatre that captures the joyful, uninhibited spirit of the Fringe at its absolute best.
The premise is wonderfully simple: a troupe of five kobolds—traditionally the cannon-fodder, lizard-like sidekicks of tabletop gaming—decide to ditch their background roles and set out on their own quest. Communicating almost entirely in an expressive, gibberish language of squeaks, grunts, and chirps, the cast relies completely on body language, sharp physical comedy, and impeccable clowning to tell their story. The narrative is ridiculously easy to follow because the ensemble commits so fully to every hop, crouch, and exaggerated reaction.
What makes the production stand out so brilliantly is its crafty, low-tech aesthetic. The entire set and prop list feels like a glorious, high-energy session of childhood make-believe, built almost entirely out of clever cardboard creations. From flimsy doors and improvised shields to wonderfully homemade monsters, the show proves that you don't need a massive budget to build a rich, immersive fantasy world. The sheer imagination on display transforms simple brown paper and moving boxes into pure theatrical magic.
The five performers share a lively, infectious dynamic on stage. Each actor brings a distinct personality to their little creature—from the overly ambitious leader to the chaotic, accident-prone weak link. Their physical commitment is exhausting just to watch, as they scuttle across the stage, tumble through absurd puzzle-solving challenges, and drag the audience along for the ride with effortless charm.
The Kobold Show! works so well because it never takes itself too seriously, yet it treats its physical craft with real precision. It is goofy, deeply inventive, and packed with genuine heart. You leave the venue with a massive smile on your face, fully convinced that a few pieces of cardboard and a lot of passion are all you really need to bring an epic adventure to life.
